| | | | Ibsen 2006 | | | The 2006 Ibsen Year marks the fact that 100 years have passed since Henrik Ibsen died. Planning has lasted a long time. The National Committee for Promotion of Ibsen was set up by the Ministry of Culture in 1997.
How do you measure the importance of a single artist for a nation - for the whole world? One of the headlines set for the commemorative year is "Ibsen as a generative force". How have his works influenced music, film, dance, litterature - how has his dramatic art affected other artists?
Probably none of us can completely grasp how great Henrik Ibsen's legacy is, but let us hope that after 2006 we will have a grater insight into Ibsenīs greatness and his influence and importance in Norway and in the rest of the world. | | Visit the website of Ibsen 2006 | | Art Pro Ibsen 2006 | | On the occasion of the Ibsen Year six well-known painters was invited to contribute with their interpretations of Ibsenīs dramas. The result is 21 unique oil on canvas paintings and 16 prints with strong expressions and big contrasts, which reflects Ibsenīs greatest works.
The six artists who have been chosen to give their own interpretations of the six most frequently performed plays by Henrik Ibsen demonstrate, in their art, the same sense of tension that we can find in the authorīs oeuvre: participating in a local context and at the same time aspiring towards identification with a broader, more general cultural and artistic tradition that reaches beyond this limited context. This aspiration is expressed by, among other things, the period of art history in which each artist seeks a framework of reference, and how htese references are used in the artistīs work.
In addition to the contributions made by the six artists, also three other important person have contributed to the project by authoring texts to the book that comes alongside with the picture collection. Ellen Horn begins the book with an account of the Ibsen Year. Bentein Baardson writes about Ibsen as a dramatic. Øivind Storm Bjerke gives his analysis of each picture and tells the story of each painter. The book has become a fantastic, informative introduction to both Ibsenīs biggest dramas and to the each of the artist careers. | | Ellen Horn | Bentein Baardson | Øivind Storm Bjerke | | | | National Ibsen 2006 Commitee
