At that time, this school offered what was perhaps the most stimulating and innovative atmosphere for young artist in Norway. Nortvedt made very conscious efforts to assert the right of women artists to be dealt with on equal terms with their male colleagues in what was still an extremely male-dominated art world.
Female figures have always played a dominant role in Nortvedt´s iconography. Her women have a consistently doll-like appearance. They gaze at the world through huge eyes. The large, wide-open eyes can be interpreted in diametrically different ways: as an innocent gaze at the world, or a gaze that sees everything. | | | |
