His basis is the interest that has arisen in young painters of his generation for classical figuration, an interest that arose in the wake of the stir created by the art of Odd Nerdrum in the previous generation. Knarvik went further than attempting to imitate a pre-existing artistic idiom. He delved into the material, literally, and studied old painting techniques in Florence and elsewhere. After having exhibited together with Odd Nerdrum on a few occasions, he began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, under Jan V. Sæther, who from 1997 to 2001 taught a special class in figurative art.
As opposed to many other artists who have been connected with the academic form of figuration, Knarvik is not an anchronist. He has oriented himself within contemporary art, and has experimented with abstract painting in pictures in which he has , among other things worked with natural materials. | | | |
