| | | | The Painters >> Ulf Nilsen | | | | Ulf Nilsen | Ulf Nilsen comes from the city of Trondheim, a historic city with a strong sense of its own worth. One characteristic of the artistic milieu of Trondheim is a respect for skill and for the practice of pictorial art as an intellectual activity. And if there is one thing that is distinctive in Ulf Nilsenīs art, it is a striking level of technical skill combined with the lofty goal that a picture should convey an idea.
When Nilsen began studying at the Academy of Art in the spring of 1973, his teachers were artists who placed themselves firmly within the same French-inspired modernist tradition with which he was already familiar. They took for granted that an artist was familiar with both art history and the history of the material and technical aspects in his field.
From a modernistic point of view the impression could have been given of an artist who had not found "his" individual style, but in retrospect it is easier to admire his ability to combine different and, to some extentcontradictory impressions and styles into what is seen today as an artistic career that has grown in complexity and intensity through the years. | | | |
